Gender, Discrimination, Oppression, Degradation, And...

All over the world, 8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day. In fact, gender equality is proclaimed as fundamental right by the United Nations’ Charter in 1945. However, the status of women is not at par with that of men in India. Ages have come and go, but the plight of women is not likely to change. From aeons, time has helplessly watched excesses done on women in the form of discrimination, oppression, exploitation, degradation, and humiliation etc. gender based discrimination represents the ugly face of the society. This is global issue with varying degrees and India is not an exception to it, especially Haryana where it’s a patriarchy society. Patriarchy is social organization has been the dominant reality to define the nature of gender relations in human society that rendered it male-centric in most parts of the world since the dawn of human civilization. Much has changed since the primitive times but the male dominated ethos still holds sway. In spite of all the advances made in the field of woman emancipation, male hegemony is still the dominant reality.1 Haryana is primarily an agrarian society and its towns too are like villages with modern facilities. In male dominated social ethos, the quest for a male child is incessant while the female child is treated as a curse. Haryana folklore crudely depicts female child as highly unwanted. The mindset is reflected in the declining social status of women in Haryana.2 Magnitude of female foeticide inShow MoreRelatedEssay On Ipv1227 Words   |  5 Pagesrural Uttar Pradesh (Kanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Barielly) will be selected. treatment methods. Depression and Anxiety causes too many problems and tears apart many people’s lives. We see many of these problems spark up in as early as the adolescents to late as the elderly. More specifically, Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are the main culprits of many people’s mental illnesses and often times, these disorders occur simultaneously or sequentially. First of all, Major Depressive Disorder, often shortened to MDD, is a mental disorder that can negatively affect a person’s daily life activities and according to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 6.7% of the U.S. population has this mental illness (2014). It is often diagnosed based on the severity and frequency of†¦show more content†¦Majority of the time, MDD comes in extended episodes. Some people experience MDD once in their life, while others struggle with it on a daily basis, but regardless of how often, the signs and symptoms are fairly the sa me. Major Depressive disorder is a relatively common mental disorder, so, much research has been done on what causes and what to expect from this disorder. With many possible causes to this disorder, researchers have narrowed it down to three, which are commonly accepted as the leading causes of MDD. The three causes include: intrapsychic, environmental, and biological (Fitzgerald Cataldo, 2012). Intrapsychic, meaning ‘occurring inside the mind,’ can be attributed to Major Depressive Disorder because many researcher believe that the disorder stems from the internalizing of negative events. The saying ‘it’s all in your head’ is a quite fitting quote for this subject at hand. When people start to have pessimistic thoughts and blame themselves for negative experiences and start believing the positive outcomes in their lives have all happened because of sheer luck and not because of their own skills, they start to experience a prolonged feeling of helplessne ss (Fitzgerald Cataldo, 2012). The Salem Witch Trial - 1152 Words

Many assumptions have been made by historians to explain the occurrence of the Salem witchcraft trials, and on why the afflicted girls behaved the way they did, but yet there still seems to remain a sense of doubt on this issue. It seems that this case is not just because of one factor such as Ergotism, but several more. The affliction started by mind suggestion. The early beliefs and superstitions in Puritanical society that were practiced on an everyday basis supported the idea that the behaviors and physical conditions of the afflicted girls were the evil works of the witches, and the Devil. Among many Puritans, this belief becomes a fear, and then this fear becomes like an additional topping that adds up to causing convulsive hysteria†¦show more content†¦Choking is unusually common: there are cases of arc de cercle, and the hysteric’s ability to induce bruises or welts on the skin may well explain some of the â€Å"teeth† marks† (Davidson Lytle 33). These symptoms of Convulsion Hysteria seem to be similar to the symptoms of â€Å"bewitchment†. For example, the afflicted girls often accused their tormentor for strangling on their throats, which is relevant to choking sensation in Convulsion Hysteria. Since the people at that period did not have much knowledge on Medical science and health, and had to often rely on natural herbs and witch-doctors, not only must have Hysteria occurred, but there must have been other health related issues that might have affected the way the afflicted girls behaved. Ergot poisoning can be a possibility. The convulsive symptoms that can be a result of consuming poisonous ergot contaminated rye bread must have been the cause of girls being bewitched. Rye is a common grain which was heavily relied by the Puritan society during that time, and the important part of it to highlight is that it was contaminated with the fungus (Ergot). It is most likely to grow in damp conditions. Variations in wea ther are therefore crucial for its growth. In New England, Rye was often grown when wheat crops were devastated by rust. Combatting Public Relations and Communication Management

Question: Discuss about the Combatting Public Relations and Communication Management. Answer: Introduction Public relations maintenance is essential for the business world in order to maintain a good relation with the customers. However, the public relation is often hampered when cases such as the case of David Jones Ltd, that resulted in the hamper of public relations with the customers. One of the most infamous cases of Australia and perhaps the biggest sexual harassment cases in the Australian history. This report highlights the main findings of the case and the recommendations that could be proposed for the solution of the case. The recommendations highlights the steps that could have been taken by the employer and the employees, that would prevent the worst consequences of the case. The swiftness by which the case of sexual harassment of Kristy Fraser-Kirk and David Jones had spread highlights the seriousness of the allegations made by the 27 years old woman. The claims of Fraser-Kirk aroused out of a series of alleged unwanted sexual interactions with the former chief executive officer of David Jones Ltd (Baird and Williamson 2011). The case took place in May and June 2010. The allegations of the lady was also against the senior management of the company David Jones, since some of them were aware of the sexual harassments that have been taking place against the lady, but did not take any action to prevent the sexual misconduct (Cornelissen 2014). The claims related to the allegation was made by David Jones, as a public statement, result in the chief executive officer Mclnnes resignation (Wright 2011). The lady Fraser Kirk had complained of the sexual harassment and the sex based discrimination against her. However, the claims she made were not a part of the pro ceedings of the Federal Court, since the complains were before the Austarlian Human Right Commission. However, if the Commission did not resolve the issues on time, then the lady would have joined these claims with the claims of the other Federal Court claims (Judd and Easteal 2013). The allegations made by the employee Fraser-Kirk was against her employer David Jones and against the CEO of the company Mclnne, along with the members of the David Jones board (Judd 2016). Though Mclnne had sexually harassed Fraser-Kirk, yet her allegations were not only against the man, but against the company itself and the board of member. These allegations made the employer vicariously liable for the sexual harassments of Fraser-Kirk done by an employee perpetrator (Van der Winden 2014). The employer David Jones tried to defend the claims of the vicarious liability of the sexual harassment faced by the alleger. David Jones was charged for not taking any step against the complaints of the employee against the chief executive officer (Wright 2011). However, the case was put up in the Federal Court and the case resulted in the resignation of the victim, the CEO of the company (Grunig 2013). While the case was on, the cab drivers and the people who had witnessed the inappropriate be haviour of the CEO with Fraser-Kirk were interviewed as witness (Wright 2011). Most of them confirmed that the allegations of Fraser-Kirk were true. However, some of the elderly businesspersons highlighted the fact that may be Fraser-Kirk did not receive much attention from the senior managers as well as the CEO, hence to receive adequate spotlight, the lady had used these allegations against the CEO (Easteal et al. 2011). This opinion is contradicted by the facts that, if the CEO was innocent, and the allegations were false, then he would not have resigned amidst the case. The fact that the company David Jones agreed to settle the case outside the court and pay such a huge amount to the complainer, highlights the fact that the charges against the CEO were true and the employers as well as the employees were aware of the fact. The evidences of the text messages send to Fraser-Kirk from Mclnne along with the voice mails, pleading for mercy, requesting her to withdraw her allegations, needs no explanations that Mclnne was guilty (Wright 2011). However, the case was finally settled out of court, by a payment of a large amount of $850,000. Within this time, the case had received adequate public spotlight (Wright 2011). Following this case, David Jones terminated the employment of Mclnne. Conclusions Maintaining a good public relation in the workplace is essential to be maintained by the employer as well as by the employees. One of the public relation theories that could be used such that a good and healthy public relation is the excellence theory. The Excellence theory is one of the general public relation theories that specifies and provides a guideline how the public relations could be made more effective in business organizations. Following the guidelines of this theory would ensure that cases such as that of Fraser-Kirt vs David Jones would not take place in any other organization. This theory specifies the behaviours that are accepted in order to promote good public relations, against the behaviours that are considered as misconduct. Recommendations In case of Fraser Vs David Jones, the CEO was at fault for his misconduct and sexual harassment against a woman employee Fraser-Kirk. The sexual misconduct by the CEO should not have been encouraged, when the sexual acts were unwelcomed by the employee. This, it is recommended to maintain a good public relation with the employees and no act of sexual harassment should be encouraged. Moreover, sexual harassment faced by an employee, men or women needs to be reported immediately as and when they occur, instead to keeping it a secret. Following the workplace ethics and guidelines would result in maintenance of public relations. Thus, if the CEO had stopped the sexual discrimination against the employee, then, the job, livelihood and the respect of Mclnne would have saved along with the huge amount of money that had to be paid to Fraser- Kirk as compensation. These recommendations followed might have saved the job of the CEO of David Jones. References Baird, M. and Williamson, S., 2011. Jane Eyre and a Tale of Two Cities Comparative Essay free essay sample

Samuel Peter Buckelew III Honors English III Dr. Williams September 1, 2011 Summer Reading Comparative Essay Intro:Many would agree that love is blind, but if this is true how can it have the ability to allow people to see and feel things untouched by other emotions. It has the power to make any given person do extraordinary things, the ability to transform or destroy anybody completely all in one emotion, one thing is for sure, it gives people a greater purpose for existence, a reason to live and die for, something beyond them to devote their life. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte and A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, are two popular, classic examples of love. Thesis: While both novels have a central theme of love, Jane Eyre focuses on the search for love while A Tale of Two Cities interprets the love for family, as well as, the search for new relationships. We will write a custom essay sample on Jane Eyre and a Tale of Two Cities Comparative Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Compare: Contrast 1: Throughout the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, many men have fallen for the beautiful Lucie Manette. Many of them have expressed their love and sensitivity towards her, but Charles Darnay won her heart. He showed the most sensitivity, respect, and compassion for Lucie and her relationship with her father, Dr. Manette, proving that his love for her was the real thing. Towards the beginning of the book two when Charles Darnay was on the trial for treason Lucie Manette had to tell the judge if she had ever  seen  the  prisoner  before. Lucie then recalled the story of the first time they met. Dr. Manette was very ill and in a very weak state of mind and Mr. Darnay begged Lucie to let him help her shelter her father from the wind so that he can begin his recovery and not get even more ill. Lucie agreed to let Charles help. Charles Darnays actions showed that not only does he care for Lucie but the ones she loves dearly. He cared for the well-being of her father. He shows his sensitivity towards the  people  most close to Lucie. Charles Darnay did not express his love for Lucie to her first. Instead, he actually told her father first. This act proved how much respect he has for Dr. Manette and his relationship with his daughter Lucie. Charles Darnay showed a lot of confidence when he was expressing his love for Lucie to Dr. Manette. For example when Mr. Darnay says to Dr. Manette, It is a tone of fervent admiration, true homage, and deep love, Doctor Manette! he said deferentially. When Mr. Darnay said this, it showed how much confidence he has to tell this to Dr. Manette. That even though the outcome may not be what he wants he still tells him. It also shows just how much he cares for Lucie and her loved ones and that his love for her is strong. Charles Darnay loves Lucie he does not want to get in between their relationship she has with her father. Dr. Manette’s stay in prison rekindled his relationship with his daughter. Therefore, he tells that to Dr. Manette so he knows that that is not what his intentions are. He just wants to express his love for Lucie. In addition, the way Mr. Darnay told Dr. Manette shows that his intentions are good and his love for Lucie is very real. The last thing Charles wants is to break their relationship. All he wants is to  share  their lives together. For example, when Charles Darnay was explaining his intentions to Dr. Manette, I look only to sharing your fortune, sharing your life and  home, and being faithful to you to death. Not to divide with Lucie her privileges as  your child, companion and friend; but to come in aid of it, and bind her closer to you, if such this can be. Meaning if Lucie decides to be Charles Darnays wife, that Dr. Manette would not be out of the picture and he wants  to bring him closer. For a man to except these circumstances is incredible. It is very  hard  to have to live in these circumstances and that Charles said this before Lucie or Dr. Manette had to shows that he will do anything for her and live however; they have to live to be with her. Even though the m en in this novel love Lucie and show their sensitive side to her, Charles Darnay shows the most sensitivity and respect above all of these men. Charles Darnay would do anything for Lucie; even if it may be difficult  to deal  with, he will do it for her. Contrast 2: In Jane Eyre, we meet Jane Eyre, who finds her true love to be someone to which whom she is not  attracted. Jane is attracted to people who contain the same intellectual  capacity as her, and has no regard  for those who have only beauty and money  to give. After attending an all-girls seminary until she reached the age of  eighteen, Jane advertises for a job as a governess, and receives one at an  estate named Thornfield. This is where she meets, Rochester, the owner of the mansion, and her true love. When she learns of a dark secret he has  been keeping, she flees to another part of England where she meets St. John,  a man who she does find good looking, but doesnt like his personality. From here, she returns to Thornfield where she marries Rochester. If Jane  had gone through her life looking for beauty instead of someone who shared  a mental  similarity with her, she never would have found happiness. Jane is attracted to Rochester, even though she does not find him  to be handsome. it was not easy to give an impromptu answer to a  question about appearances; that tastes mostly differ; and that beauty is   of little consequence After answering no to Rochesters question of  whether or not he was handsome, she goes on to tell him that appearances  mean little or nothing. Jane understands that to have a true and loving  relationship with someone, that both must have not looks, b ut a similarity  in thought, and a like for the others personality. Relationships such as  this are ones of quality that will last for a long time. Although Jane is  not a beautiful woman, she is able to find happiness and that is what is  most important. Jane has no regard for the beautiful Miss Ingram, for she has no  intellectual capacity. Jane is not jealous of her closeness to Rochester for  she has no qualities to be jealous of. She was very showy, but she was not  genuine; she had a fine person, many brilliant attainments, but her mind   was poor, her heart barren by nature Jane knows it is far better to  have a good mind and to be a good thinker than to have beautiful features  and an abundance of money. It is this attitude of Janes that allows her to  make the right decisions. Jane does not fall in love and marry St. John for even though is  more handsome than Rochester and she is attracted to him, he does not have  the same intellect. He was young-perhaps from twenty-eight to thirty-tall,  slender; his face riveted the eye; it was like a Greek face, very pure in  outline. St. John has beautiful features, but he cannot communicate with  and talk at the same intellectual level with Jane as can Rochester. there was another barrier to friendship with him: he seemed of a  reserved, an abstracted, and even of a brooding nature he did not appear  to enjoy that mental serenity Jane would never be able to have a lasting  relationship with Saint John because they have no common interests, and her whole heart already belonged to Rochester. It  is because of Janes decision to leave Saint John, due to a lack of soul  likeness, which allows her to marry Rochester for his personality. Conclusion:

Ethics and Public Health Data

Question: Discuss about theEthics and Public Health Data. Answer: Introduction In line with its mandate of providing health care services to the public, the government requires to use its agencies to carry out research and surveillance. This is quite significant because it helps in the collection of data used for detecting disease out breaks, prioritizing, implementing and monitoring public health programs (Thomas, 2014). Nevertheless, the collection of public data, which in many occasions involve private information, should be done in compliance with the national and international regulations. No matter how much important public health data is, its collection, storage, and usage should adhere to the ethical standards. The government agencies have a legal obligation to protect individual privacy and liberty especially for individually-identifiable data (Vayena, Mastroianni Kahn, 2012). The law guarantees each individual to voluntarily participate in a research, have power over the usage of their data and be protected from unnecessary revelation of the same to other unauthorized parties. Although pubic officials entrusted with the collection, storage and usage of the public health data are restricted from violating individual liberties, the law gives them a relief to reveal private information should it be necessary to do so. In such circumstances, it becomes ethically justifiable to disclose individual health information because, by doing so, the authorities are acting for the sake of common good (Thomas, 2014). It can be right if individual privacy is contravened to avail information to be used for achieving a noble public health objective such as monitoring, responding to or identifying a disability, death or disease outbreak in the community. Ultimate Recreational Vehicle Essay Example For Students

Ultimate Recreational Vehicle Essay The Ultimate Recreational SportMichael LackieFor as long as I can remember, my family has always enjoyed recreational sports. In the summerwe would go jet skiing, river rafting, off road motorcycle riding, and water skiing. Once winter came along, we switched to snowmobiling, snowboarding, and hunting. My father and his brother owned allthe expensive toys, while my brothers, cousins and I owned the cheaper toys. While it was fun usingour parents expensive toys, we had to be careful not to damage them. So for years we saved our money in the hopes of buying our own expensive toys, but we could only save enough for one; therefore, we needed to find one that would fit all of our needs. I explained the problem to a friend, who then proceeded to tell me about this ultimate recreational sport that should solve my problem. We will write a custom essay on Ultimate Recreational Vehicle specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I was to meet my friend in the morning to help him pack up for the ultimate recreational sportthat would solve my dilemma. I arrived at his house early the next morning and helped load up the all terrain vehicles that we would be riding. They were motorcycles with four wheels instead of two and looked like an oversized tricycle with big paddle tires on the front and rear. These particular models were called Yamaha Banshees. We loaded up three of them on a trailer attachedto the back of his truck, then drove for a couple of hours before finally reaching our destination. I woke up to see miles and miles of sand dunes, and noticed we were on the border of Mexico and California in a place called Glamis. I thought this was going to be an interesting experience even if I did not like it. After unloading the Banshees, we suited up with protective gear and helmets. My friend led the pack and therewere about ten riders in all. I stayed back as this was my first time riding on the sand dunes. Everybody took off at full speed and there was sand flying everywhere, so I had to stay out of the way or else eat lots of sand. Once I learned how to ride without getting sand in my face, then I started to catch up with the group. From that moment on, I knew this was going to be fun. We rode up and down sand dunes jumping off them and riding on top of them for hours before we finally stopped for a rest break at the top of a real high dune. Sitting there, we could see nothing but sand dunes for miles and I wasnt sure which way was back to camp. Then my friendpulled out a global tracking system and it showed exactly where we were located, so this set my mind at ease. Although it was just sand dunes, there was something calming and beautiful about them, and I fell in love with them from that point on. Once we caught our breath, we continued the journey deeper into the dunes. We rode on dunes that were over one hundred feet high and could reach speeds of up to eighty miles an hour arou nd the edges. Then we came across dunes that were so high and steep that we almost couldnt make it to the top without considerable effort. Once nightfall came, and the moon came out, it was even more fun riding because the moon reflected off the sand and lit up the night. We eventually arrived back at camp and settled down for the night, exhausted but satisfied. I was convinced that I had found the one vehicle that we could purchase and fit all of our needs. Riding the Banshees in the sand dunes was like snowboarding, water skiing, motorcycling, and river rafting all combined into one sport. I went back home happy in my quest that I had found the ultimate recreational sport. BibliographyPersonal ExperienceSports and Games Essays

The Pygmy Chain Sword Plants Essay Example

The Pygmy Chain Sword Plants Essay Example The Pygmy Chain Sword Plants Paper The Pygmy Chain Sword Plants Paper Understanding the process of photosynthesis is also vital in other areas, such as medicine, agriculture, energy production, and even electronics. In medicine, since light has extremely high energy content, sometimes it can cause damage to living organisms such as skin cancer and skin aging. To combat the high-energy content, plants developed photoprotective mechanisms to limit the amount of harm, which is caused from exposure to the light. By learning about the causes of tissue damage cause by light exposure and the way photoprotective mechanisms operate, we can develop our understanding of this process and use it to benefit the human race. An example of how photosynthesis has been applied in the medical field is in the treatment of tumors, where substances related to chlorophyll are injected into cancerous tumor tissue and exposed to light. The illumination of these tumors causes photochemical damage to take place, which can kill the tumor and leave surrounding tissue unharmed, as the protective agents converted the excess absorbed light into heat due to the basic principles of photosynthesis. Overall, photosynthesis is relatively inefficient, as only one to two percent of solar energy is used to form photosynthetic products. From that one to two percent, many plants undergo a process called photorespiration that causes them to waste much of the photosynthetic energy absorbed. By studying photosynthesis in detail and understanding processes like photorespiration, we can learn to control these processes so we can increase the productivity and efficiency of plants. Research along these lines is critical, as recent studies show that agricultural production is leveling off at a time when demand for food and other agricultural products is increasing rapidly. (Gust) Research into photosynthesis could lead to the production of more efficient crop strains or the development of more efficient, selective, and environmentally friendly herbicides that take effect by preventing steps of photosynthesis from occurring. Developing our understanding of photosynthesis can help to deal with issues of global importance, the decreasing amounts of fossil fuels and coal, which are vital to our daily life, especially in developing countries such as China where most of the power plants rely on coal. By learning how to control and increase the efficiency of photosynthesis, we can increase the production of fuels derived from agriculture such as ethanol. A new experimental process carried out by scientists today involve making ethanol from trees, grasses, and crop wastes by breaking down the cellulose in woody fibers to form cellulosic ethanol. This is much more efficient as trees and grasses do not need to be replanted every year like grains. (Ethanol made from, 2006) By increasing our understanding of photosynthesis, we can cut down on our dependence on fossil fuels, and on the production of greenhouse gases, by increasing the production of ethanol as an alternate source of fuel. Photosynthesis can even help in the development of technology, as engineers strive to make transistors and circuit components smaller in order to make computers faster and more compact, similar to how thylakoid membranes are packed inside chlorophyll molecules. Learning how plants control the movement of light energy to the different reaction centers and convert the light energy into chemical energy, can allow for the development of molecular-scale computers The reason why I chose this research question is that apart from my own personal interest in plants and my concern over the rising levels of pollution on earth, by understanding photosynthesis, the basis of life on earth, we can make medical and technological discoveries to improve our standards of living. Yet at the same time we can learn to control photosynthesis in order to increase the production of food and ethanol, and limit the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.

The Life and Death of O. Henry (William Sydney Porter)

The Life and Death of O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) Famous short-story writer O. Henry was born William Sydney Porter on Sept. 11, 1862, in Greensboro, N.C. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a physician. His mother, Mrs. Algernon Sidney Porter (Mary Virginia Swaim), died from consumption when O. Henry was just three years old, so he was raised by his paternal grandmother and his aunt. Early Years and Education O. Henry attended the private elementary school of his aunt, Evelina Porter (Miss Lina), starting in 1867. He then went to Linsey Street High School  in Greensboro, but he  left school at the age of 15 to work as a bookkeeper for his uncle at W. C. Porter and Company Drug Store. As a result,  O. Henry was largely self-taught. Being  an avid reader helped. Marriage,  Career, and Scandal O. Henry worked a number of different jobs, including as a ranch hand in Texas, licensed pharmacist, draftsman, bank clerk, and columnist.  And in 1887, O. Henry  married Athol Estes, stepdaughter of Mr. P. G. Roach. His most notorious occupation was as a bank clerk for the First National Bank of Austin. He resigned from his job in 1894 after he was accused of embezzling funds. In 1896, he was arrested on charges of embezzlement. He posted bail, skipped town, and finally returned in 1897 when he learned that his wife was dying. Athol died on July 25, 1897, leaving him one daughter, Margaret Worth Porter (born in 1889). After O. Henry served his time in prison, he married Sarah Lindsey Coleman in Ashville, N.C. in  1907. She  had been his childhood sweetheart. They separated the following year. The Gift of the Magi Short story The Gift of the Magi is one of O. Henrys most famous works. It was published in 1905 and chronicles a cash-strapped couple tasked with buying Christmas presents for each other. Below are some of the key quotes from the story. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. The magi, as you know, were wise men - wonderfully wise men - who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones. Blind Mans Holiday Blind Mans Holiday was published in the short story collection Whirligigs in 1910. Below is a memorable passage from the work: Man is too thoroughly an egoist not to be also an egotist; if he love, the object shall know it. During a lifetime he may conceal it through stress of expediency and honour, but it shall bubble from his dying lips, though it disrupt a neighbourhood. It is known, however, that most men do not wait so long to disclose their passion. In the case of Lorison, his particular ethics positively forbade him to declare his sentiments, but he must needs dally with the subject... In addition to this passage, here are key quotes from O. Henrys other works: He wrote love stories, a thing I have always kept free from, holding the belief that the well-known and popular sentiment is not properly matter for publication, but something to be privately handled by the alienist and the florist.  - The Plutonian FireIt was beautiful and simple as all truly great swindles are.  - The Octopus Marooned Death O. Henry died a poor man on June 5, 1910. Alcoholism and ill health are believed to have been factors in his death. The cause of his death is listed as cirrhosis of the liver. Funeral services were held at a church in New York City, and he was buried in Ashville. His last words are said to have been: Turn up the lights - I dont want to go home in the dark.

Professional Letter Writing

Professional Letter Writing When you learn the basics of professional letter writing, you will soon notice that you have a skill that many business people do not have. Professional letter writing is just as important into today’s society as it was when guidelines for this standard of writing were set. This article outlines some tips that will help you to write effective and professional letters to your clients, other business, and your affiliates. Beginning a Professional Letter Professional letter writing begins with a proper greeting to your intended reader. It is important to address a person correctly when writing a letter. How you begin your letter sets the stage for how your reader will accept the letter. For instance, if you start a letter with â€Å"Hey there,† the person reading the letter will not be enthusiastic to read the rest of the letter because they feel unappreciated. On the other hand, if you begin your letter with, â€Å"Dear Mrs. Smith,† the reader will know that you have acknowledged them personally. Here are examples for opening a professional letter: Dear Ms. Smith: If you do not know if the reader is married or not Dear Mrs. Smith: If you are sure the lady reader is married Dear Mr. Smith: For any male whether married or not Dear Dr. Smith: If the reader hold this degree, whether they are male or female To Whom It May Concern: If you do not know if the letter is going to be read by a male or female The Body of the Letter The body of your letter is extremely important because this is where you convey your thoughts. Professional letter writing demands that you use grammatically correct sentences and that your spelling is impeccable. Be sure to use the spell check function on your word processor before sending off a letter to someone. Your thoughts must be organized and flow smoothly in your letter. If a letter is hard for the reader to understand, they may ignore the letter or simply toss it aside for another time. If possible, each point or new discussion in your letter should begin a new paragraph. Closing a Professional Letter Professional letter writing begins with an appropriate beginning, and, thus, must end with an appropriate closing. There are many options for how you choose to end your letter, but the main thing to remember is the right way to write out a closing. Take a look at these examples: Sincerely yours, Best regards, Yours truly, Best wishes, Do you notice any similarities in these four examples? The first word is capitalized, while the second word is not. This is the correct way to end a letter. Do not capitalize both words. A closing statement should feel comfortable to you, or go with the flow of your letter. In professional letter writing, the term â€Å"Sincerely yours,† and â€Å"Best regards,† are more suited when you do not personally the person that you wrote. The other two examples would make good closing statements for a friend or colleague. Professional letter writing becomes easier the more you practice using it, and it should become a habit, if you are serious about how you present yourself to others.

The rights revolution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The rights revolution - Essay Example The country has had a lot of trouble incorporating the Quebec and non-Quebec nation into the political framework. As a result of the forced incorporation of such elements as women’s rights, and aboriginal land claims into the 1982’s Charter of Rights and Freedom, Canadian culture has become extremely distinct with respect to people’s rights. Canada is a socially democratic society that places special emphasis on the group rights as reflected both in the Quebec’s Charte de la langue francaise and in the agreements of treaty which acknowledges the rights of aboriginal people upon the land and resources. Canada is one of very few countries which stipulates the terms and conditions regarding the distortion of federation in the decisions of Supreme Court as well as in the federal legislation. Such an overt expression of concerns regarding secession increases its susceptibility to happen. Nevertheless, rules have been defined clearly in order to avoid ambiguitie s and violation by mistake. Besides, clear dictation of the secession laws reduces the chances of breakout of civil war. The recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada regarding secession identifies two primary concepts about rights. The first idea says that conflict is frequent while the second idea realizes the purpose of the rights language in the conditions of conflict which is to promote peaceful adjudication. Canada has also influenced the world with her rights talk.

Discuss the implications of long and short term tracheostomy tubes on Essay

Discuss the implications of long and short term tracheostomy tubes on physiotherapy patient management - Essay Example Inhibition of the airway by any foreign body in the lynx is also a reason that would lead to a tracheotomy. The other reason is the inability to remove any secretions from the trachea. Another reason is sleeping problems in obese individuals leading to restricted breathing (Johnson, Gluckman, & Sanders, 2001). Lastly damage to the vocal cord which causes swallowing difficulties that lead to aspiration problems is another major reason. The management of patients with tracheotomy tubes is carried out by an individual with specialized skill to avoid any complications (Wijesinghe & Gough, 2000). The patients require regular care on the tracheotomy tube to ensure they are clean and are in good working conditions (Goldstein, 2004). The wound should be cleaned regularly to avoid infection that may lead to complications later. The pipes need to be suctioned regularly to avoid any blockages that may impede with the regular functioning of the tracheotomy-tubes (Ji, Kim & Park, 2002). The patients need to be educated on basic measures that they should observe in order to decrease the risk of infections and on how to care for the tracheotomy tubes (Lewarski, 2005). For example the patients should ensure that they avoid touching the tracheotomy tubes with unclean hands. In addition the patients should be advised to clean the wound when instructed to by the medical practitioner only (May & Porter, 2008). The patients are advised to see a doctor if they experience any pain or notice any thing out of the ordinary to ensure that any complication or issue is attended to on time (Morris & Afifi, 2010). The management of the care givers who take care of tracheotomy patients is done through proper training. These care givers who are physiotherapists are provided with the correct equipment to ensure that they offer the patients the best care. These equipments include

Steve Jobs speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Steve Jobs speech - Essay Example To better prepare the audience for what they were about to hear, President John Hennessy reminded everyone of some of Steve Jobs’ main achievements in his life. Once Steve Jobs stepped up to the podium, he gave a more detailed summary about the key events in his own life. To better get his message across, Jobs focused on three main stories: connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. These three stories are very different from one another, yet in another way they are remarkably similar. There is one theme that runs through all of these stories—you can achieve anything at all as long as you put your mind to it. This theme was appropriate considering the demographics of his audience: young, college graduates who are looking to find their place in the world. Steve Jobs’ first story, connecting the dots, used his real life experiences to show how certain events can influence the course of someone’s life. The story of his birth showed how unwanted he was as a child, and yet at the same time his life’s journey was being planned for him before it had even began. Back in the 1970’s, becoming a college graduate was seen as the ultimate success in life (in some ways, this is still the same today). Jobs described his emotions when he was attending college even though he did not want to be there. I can relate to this because I develop these feelings from time to time. Jobs felt that college was a waste of time and he would be better served by selected only the classes that interested him. I feel that this is a very bold decision to make, especially in the context of today’s environment, where the minimum expectation is a college degree. Jobs’ choice to drop out of college would be quite radical even for today, not to mention 30 or 40 years ago. However, this brave and bold decision allowed Jobs to be influenced by calligraphy, which would later go on to influence the design of the Apple computer. Overall, Jobs†™ key instruction here is to go with what feels best in your heart. There are so many other people and institutions that tell us what we should be doing, when in fact we are the ones who know what we want to achieve and succeed at. In my view, the choices made in our lives lead to consequences, both good and bad, and it is our choices that determine the path that our life takes us down. Jobs’ second story, love and loss, shows how plans can go astray, yet the ultimate goal can still be fulfilled. Jobs found a career that he loved, not just as a means to get by. This is something that he alludes to throughout his speech, although he does not actually mention it directly. I agree that success in life is always easier if you are doing something that you actually love. If so, you are more likely to put your heart and soul into it and receive a great reward from it. For Steve Jobs, this was working day in and day out at Apple. However, he came across a fork in the road—he was ousted from the company by the Board of Directors. Many people would react badly to this, yet Jobs knew that he still loved working with computers and would not let this setback stop him from achieving his dream. He ended up creating his own company and later rejoined Apple. None of this would have been possible had he not been fired from Apple in the first place. I found this concept really hard to grasp because it seemed like his life had been taken away from him, although he eventually got it back. This unfortunate event

Personal Development Plan Part 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Personal Development Plan Part 2 - Essay Example the same time, though, I realize that such output, while good, was not my best, and that I could have done better had I exercised proper time management instead of procrastinating. It is for this reason that I chose to work on my weaknesses as the focus of my personal development – in this case in particular, fixing my weaknesses will allow me to utilize my strengths to greater effect. Time management – a concept our parents and teachers have been beating us over the head with ever since elementary. Those of us fortunate (and diligent) enough to gain a good grasp of it early on usually end up becoming successful enough, while those who fail at it often end up failing at everything else. This is not too noticeable in elementary and high school, where students have their daily schedules predetermined – they know what time each subject is, which saves them the trouble of having to fix their schedule. In college, however, time management and/or the lack of it becomes more readily apparent. According to Penn State’s University Learning Center (2001), the greater freedom of movement in college means it falls down to the students themselves to manage their time as they please. Before discussing my time management issues, though, I feel it to be more important to first define what exactly time management is. According to Steve Pavlina (2008), time management boils down to deciding what one must do and then doing it. And while these steps may look simple enough to understand at first, another question immediately follows: what exactly should one do at a given moment? Opportunity costs also come into play as no matter what course of action one chooses, it will always involve forgoing the results that could have been gotten from the other options. Thus, as in business, it becomes necessary to choose the path with minimum cost, yet maximum satisfaction. In short, time management should focus on scheduling the best task for a given period of time. All other side

Politics in Texas Essay Example for Free

Politics in Texas Essay The Texan republicans stand for the ideas of individualism. That entrepreneurship is the key to unlocking the powers of the economy, according to the Republican Party. The Democratic Party respects the notion of small business and entrepreneurship as it also strives to encourage jobs for hard-working laborers. In conjunction with this, the Democrats want businesses to be more flexible and technologically friendly, along with finding creative, environmentally-sound ways of promoting business. The Green Party also claims to support the power of the small business, but they have a more environmental approach that specifies several details in which companies should abide. In accordance with this, the Green Party wishes to limit free-trade in exchange with environmentally and labor friendly trade. They also specify a set wage that would allow an individual to afford a one-bedroom apartment on thirty-percent of their income. In opposition to a heavily regulated economy, the libertarians seem like the Republican Party, but to a more extreme. They are against most taxation, including income taxes since they define a wage or salary as a trade of money and service, not an equity. I believe this to be a proper point. How can people promote the economy when a chunk of their wages is taken by the government? The Libertarians are also opposed to the use of eminent domain which I agree with. It should not be up to the government to choose how someone’s property may or may not be used.

Here, the players dive from the helicopter with the required precautions. The length and the depth of the place where the helicopter lands soon the diver jumps matters a lot in this game. The games such as the cricket, the football, the throw ball, the basket ball, the volley ball, etc are commonly played in the groups or the teams. The team games have reached into an international level with the best rewards. The games such as the crickets are commonly found played between two teams among the country or the world. These games also help the children to enjoy their vacation during summers when they are not allowed to play out in the sun. The games usually could be seen played between the family members, friends and the relatives. These types of games help the family elders to enjoy with their children in the vacation times and also during the holiday times. The games such as the carom and the chess are considered to be as one among the international games that are played worldwide. The other petty games such as the snake and ladder, business, ludo, etc are simply played among the family members for their amusement purpose. These games include most of the games that are played inside a perimeter or simply the grounds. The games such as fishing are normally carried out in the banks of the water bodies. Fishing requires a highly calm mind and also the large amount of patience. Fishing is the commonly found solo game among every other game. The other games are the disc drives where the discs are thrown among two parallel people. The disc refers to the flat plate like structure that is mostly made of the plastic and is used only for the playing of the disc throw purposes. These games require a high muscle work. In this type of games two people stand exactly opposite to one another and start playing. The next games are the commonly known games all among the world. The games that are played outside helps the people to expose themselves in to the outer environment which is required for a healthy growth of both the physical and the mental abilities of the students. These games are helpful in building a good relationship between to enemy countries through the matches where people like to see all play together rather than each play differently. These games help in building brotherhood between most of the countries. Snow Games Snow games are those games that are played in the snowy areas. These games require a very much daring mentality. These games include the solo games and also the group games. More than a group game it can also be considered as the fun and enjoyment of the people who play snow games with or without any companies. Snow games are also one among the games which were basically found and introduced by the outsiders of the country. These games can be played either as single or as solo players. Snow games were formally designated to be as simple games which were played from the people who would visit the snow covered areas. Snow games were found first by the ancient people who discovered that the falling on the snows would never hurt. And so they discovered various snow games to enjoy their free times. Later it was spread throughout the world. Snow games were simply meant as the solo game where one has to play alone to win. Later the adding up of the number of people into this field was started. Snow games are the most fun games where one would never get much hurt when fallen on the snows. These snow games require much of the skills to play with or else the one who would like to play will end up in getting into some kind of trouble. As soon as the snow gliding game starts, itÃÆ' ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s difficult for the one who started to stop the game by oneself. Snow games are much more fun when it is played under the guidance of the expertise. If the game is played without even thinking of having perfect training then it would be too difficult to overcome the circumstances which would come up in the last of the game. Solo Games Solo games are referred to as those games that are played just by a single person. Solo games are not that much popular when they are compared to the other type of games. These games are played alone and do not require any partners or friends to play with. Solo games are commonly known for those games where the games have to be played alone. These games will not be like those games where team work is used. This kind of games depends on the skills of the only person who would play it. The solo games include most of the daring or simply the extreme games. The game includes the bike racing, sky diving, underwater diving and many more. These games are the dangerous and the daring games and it will too much difficult if a slightest mistake occurs. The solo games are the most dangerous games and these games have to be played alone from the player. The other petty solo games are the games that are displayed in the malls. The choice of the games will be more here and every gain and the lost all will be of the person who would play it. These games were first used to tighten the relationships of the neighboring countries. Later it declined since there was not much advantage from these games and there were only disadvantages from these kinds of games. Solo games can also include the athletics and all other games that are included among the international games all around the world. Solo games are not that much popular since there is no team work here and the bonding also looses before getting strengthened. The solo games are not much encouraged in all the countries. And hence solo games have not found any popularity anywhere. Training To Reach The Goal Training is the most required part of oneÃÆ' ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life who would never ever think to give up his or her goal. To reach this level one should have the perfect desire to win or to come up in life. Life never pushes you through your goal. It should be always you who would reach your goal. The first step towards the reaching of goal in life is to decide about the future which you should have to reach. Then it will be easy to decide everything that has to be done till that goal is reached. Every human being is born with the strong desire to achieve the goal. But most just give up because of the difficulties. The main part of the life is to have someone who would guide through every dark road till you reach the light that was designed for you. That someone is the trainer here who would help you to be prepared for the obstacles that would come through your life. The path of the goal will always be tough and will push you that much where you would just plan of giving up and turning back. But the truth is that the harder the life pushes you through, the stronger you would be to withstand all the difficulties of the life that would yet to come in future. Training is required for the people to know about the actual life. The trainer teaches you to slide through all the obstacles. That teaching is known as the training here where you would be fully prepared for any of the difficulties when your training is finished or the teaching is done. Teaching is so much helpful in life that the people will never learn to either give up or to turn back in life.

Different people, cultures, and nations have a wide variety of expectations about how much privacy is entitled to or what constitutes an invasion of privacy. Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information. Personal privacy has been declining in the past year which is caused by today’s technological society. With the latest technology such as face scanners, data collecting, and highly advanced software’s, privacy can be compromised, which is exactly what is being done today and it is unconstitutionally intrusive. In particular The NSA or National Security Agency was reported to collect massive amounts of data from the citizens of the United States and many other foreign countries. This data was not obtained with the permission of the people but obtained in secrecy and the majority of the data that was collected was â€Å"phone metadata, or information about who you call, when you called them, where you called them, what kind of carrier you were using, and more† (Kelly 2). With this kind of information being obtained people’s lives can be perceived by ...

The No Child Left Behind Act Essay -- American Government, Politics

Initiated in 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 intended to prevent the academic failures of educational institutions and individual students, as well as bridge achievement gaps between students. This act supports the basic standards of education reform across America; desiring to improve the learning outcomes of America’s youth. No Child Left Behind has left many to criticize the outcomes of the Act itself. Questions have risen concerning the effectiveness of NCLB, as well as the implications to America’s youth. Thesis The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 should be revised to allow better accountability of student success, accountability of schools progress, and better flexibility for teachers. About â€Å"No Child Left Behind† Signed into law in 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 had ample bipartisan support. Implementing the belief that setting high achievement goals in education would yield an increase in student success nationwide, the act requires all states to build assessments for all grade levels concerning the basic skills of reading and math. This in turn provides assurances of federal funding for the public schools who participate fully in this practice. The goal of the act is to have every child achieve their grade level in math and reading by 2014. It was based off the Elementary & Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. ESEA established the Title I programs, which became the first federal education aid to support children of poor urban/rural areas (Ed.Gov). Accountability of Student Success â€Å"Accountability for improved student achievement lies at the heart of the ESEA debate (Jennings, 2010).† According to Jennings,we must relook how student progress in English language arts and math sho... ...positions. Teachers should be rewarded by success, not penalized by single sided test results. In conclusion, the initial intentions of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) were to close the achievement gap between low achieving students and schools and their counterparts; but have fallen short in many important aspects along the way. Teachers have become de-sensitized to the reasons they initially desired to be educators and have lost their vision of how to implement instruction due to standards of NCLB and the consequences for not meeting those mandated goals. Likewise, students must perform, many times, above their level in order to be labeled â€Å"adequate† by the federal government and their schools. In some cases, there is a disproportionate burden placed on schools, teachers, and students, all for the sake of what is federally deemed as average achievement.

Evaluation of a computerised system Essay

Meeting the requirements specification In the evaluation of this project, the first things that must be considered are the first objectives that were set for the system to meet. This is the requirements specification. I will break down each objective listed in the requirements specification and discuss whether the objectives have been met.   To complete the new system by the deadline agreed This requirement was met. The date that was arranged was the 21st March 2008 and the date that was used on the calendar of dates was also this date.   The database will need to be able to store enough records. The hardware that was acquired for the new system to be stored on in the end was a 120 GB hard disk, and then was well enough to store the whole database of records on.   The system will need to alert the user when stock is low or has run out The query ‘Out of stock’ along with its report counterpart is enough of an alert to let the user know that staff has run out. However, there is no way of checking when stock is low, and the ideal alert for items that have gone out of stock would be automatic rather than the user having to run the report or query. Data must be backed up to minimise loss of data and to reduce the amount of work if data does get lost A sufficient back-up plan has been constructed which included at least two ways of backing up records at regular intervals.   To find information about an item quickly The ‘Find product’ query is a good way of finding information about an item quickly. It allows the user to search for an item using its name or in a separate query a product ID can be used. Alternatively, items can be browsed through using the Products form.   Generate a unique ID for each customer entered into the database. A unique ID for each customer that is entered into the database is generated.   Generate a record for customer details entered into the database The Customers form is used to enter customer details into the database, and its ‘Add new record’ button is a way of generating a new record for the data that has been input.   Produce an error if the customer already exists in the database This objective has not been met directly, however there are measures that can be taken to see if a customer already exists in the database. An error is not produced automatically, but a query has been created to check the database for the customer. Show the new customer table when a new customer has been added When a new customer is added the new customer table is not shown, however this is not necessary as the user isn’t able to view the tables, but the data is immediately accessible by the user via the Customers form.   Show the new customer table when a customer has been deleted The same applies for deleting a customer as applies to adding a new customer. The data is not shown as a table but is immediately accessible via the Customers form.   Generate a unique ID for each product added into the database. A unique ID for each product that is entered into the database is automatically generated.   Generate a record for product details entered into the database When details of an item are entered into a Products form and the ‘Add new record’ button is clicked, then a new record is generated for that data that has been input.   Show the new product table when a product has been added The same applies to this as applies to customers.   Show the new product table when a product has been deleted The same applies as above.   Generate a unique ID for each staff member added to the database. A unique ID is generated for each staff member that is entered into the database is automatically generated. Generate a record for each staff member added into the database When the details of a new member of staff are entered into a Staff form and the ‘Add new record’ button is clicked, then a new record is generated for that data that has been input. Show the new staff table when a new staff member is added into the database The same applies to this as applies to customers.   Show the new staff table when a staff member is deleted from the database. The same applies as above. Generate a unique ID for each sale that takes place A unique ID is generated for each sale that takes place is automatically generated. Generate a record for each sale that takes place When the details of a sale are entered into the Sales form and the ‘Add new record’ button is clicked, then a new record is generated for that data that has been input. Show the new sales table when a sale has been added into the database The same applies to this as applies to customers.   Update the stock levels for the item purchased after a sale. The same applies as above.   Produce an error message if the customer doesn’t exist When a sale is conducted, if a customer ID doesn’t exist in the Customers table but is entered into the Sales table then an error message is produced.   Produce an error message if the item isn’t in stock An error message is not directly produced if an item is in stock, but when a staff member uses a query to locate an item to reduce the stock by 1, they should notice that the stock level for that item is already 0. Correctly archive data from the sales table. Data can be archived from the sales table using two queries that have been created: an append query and a delete query. Data older than 28 days in the Sales table is appended to the Archived Sales table using the first query, then data older than 28 days in the Sales table is deleted using the second. Summary table of requirements specification Here is a table to summarise whether or not the original requirements specification has been met or not: Objective no. Target met Target partly met Target not met Reason for not meeting target Page reference 1 X 2 X 3 X Report created to tell user all items out of stock. 4 X 5 X 6 X 7 X 8 X Query created to check existance of customer 9 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 10 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 11 X 12 X 13 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 14 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 15 X 16 X 17 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 18 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 19 X 20 X 21 X Tables not accessible by end-user, but data viewable in form 22 X 23 X 24 X. Report created to show all items out of stock, and when updating stock levels staff should know it is out of stock. 25 X Signed: _____________________________________ User response In the Implementation section of this project I issued the staff at the shop with a copy of the new system and a questionnaire to fill in about using it. Here are the results of the questionnaire that I obtained. The main menu is easy to follow. True / False 10 0 Comments towards this statement indicated that the main menu was very easy to follow and needs no improvement. It is easy to navigate around the whole system. True / False 10 0 Comments on this question also indicated that it needed no improvement. There was indication that each area of the whole system is accessible via the main menu. The layout is consistent. True / False 10 0 There were no comments about this statement. The text throughout the system is easy to read. True / False 10 0 Comments stated that font was large enough to read, and that the contrast in colour with the background was significant. The colour scheme is appropriate. True / False 10 0 Comments say that the colour scheme is consistent, simple and attractive to the eye. The system is secure enough. True / False 2 8 Comments towards this statement indicated that when the system is run, the whole system is accessible and therefore a password should be required in order to gain access to the system. Your user-guide is easy to follow and read. True / False 10 0 Comments mainly say that the user guide is straightforward and easy to follow. It explains how to use the system sufficiently. Command buttons are all in a suitable place. True / False 10 0 Comments explain that command buttons are in a logical order and are well laid out. All of the drop-down lists work. True / False 10 0 There were no comments about this statement. All of the correct information is stored. True / False 10 0 Comments mainly say that data is entered into forms and is successfully stored in tables. Reports are sufficient and have a good layout. True / False 10 0 Comments say that the layout of the reports is consistent and the reports show sufficient information. All dates stored within the system work correctly. True / False 10 0 Comments mention that the date is automatically entered into the sales table, and all other dates within the system correctly work. The validation rules work. True / False 10 0 Comments say that validation minimises errors when typing and makes the user aware that they have made a spelling mistake. The validation rules are helpful. True / False 10 0 Comments say that spelling mistakes and typing errors are minimised due to the validation rules that are in place. Almost all of the questions received fully satisfied answers. The only exception was that the database was secure enough. This received a slightly negative response along with suggestions that the database should have a password. This was originally included in the design of the project but was left our during the system development stage. The problem was, however, rectified and the system was accepted. Good points, bad points and possible extensions From my evaluation so far and the user’s questionnaire, I am able to create a list of good points and bad points of the system: Good points   The switchboard allows easy access around the whole of the system   A professional-looking colour scheme has been created to give the system a sense of consistency. On-screen text is clear and easy to read due to a simple font and high contrast to the colour of the background   No faults were detected in the user guide and everyone seems to be able to use the new system   Error messages are clear so that they can be corrected when they occur Validation on fields improves reliability of data that is entered into the database and validation rules are found to be useful   Some areas of the database have automatic data entry, such as ID fields and some date fields, reducing the amount of work for the end-user   It is quick and easy to enter data due to the forms that have been created. Drop-down lists are available on some fields to make it easier for the end-user to enter data Bad points Backing up can be quite slow and time consuming due to data transfer on to the particular USB drive that was purchased having a slow transfer speed. Burning data on to discs, and also removing data from discs, is slow   Having to run two queries to archive data is tedious, as it would be much easier to only have to run one command in order to do it   Archiving data is easy to forget and it would be useful to have a reminder every 28 days Limitations. The system still has some limitations, despite the fact that it has been improved greatly, with improved efficiency and much less chance of errors being made. Here is a list of limitations that the system has, and also some of the system requirements that were not completely fulfilled. There is no automatic alert to tell the user that stock levels are low and that more need to be ordered in   Paper has not been completely eliminated from the system. Reports are used to create lists of data to store in an archive, or to give information to the stock control manager when ordering new stock without having to load up the system The system is not able to produce reminders every time data needs archiving   There is no error message generated when a user is entered into the database again Possible extensions There are still extensions that could possibly be made to the system, and time and funds permitting, these are still possible to implement at some stage. Here are some of the extensions that could be made:   When carrying out a sale, it would be a good idea if the stock levels could automatically be updated to reduce the stock levels by one. An alternative to this would be to allow the user to reduce the level of stock via the sales form, rather than having to locate the correct record using the products form   It would be a good idea for the database to produce a reminder every 28 days to remind the user to archive old sales. This would reduce clutter in the database and decrease the amount of time it would take to look at data in the sales table   To allow the stock control manager to create a list of stock that needs to be ordered in automatically so that he could send this to the manufacturer. This would greatly reduce his workload.
